EAP Says “Thanks” to Linda DuttenhaverThe generosity of a 1975 EAP alumna enables EAP students to go abroad on scholarship funds set up in the memory of her friend, Dan Wise
Said Linda, “This fund is a perfect way to commemorate Dan, a man who loved language, travel, and international culture. Dan lived an international life, serving in the Peace Corps in Senegal, living and working in Germany, and owning a travel agency. I often thought of Dan as a ‘modern day Renaissance man’—with a great interest in anything having to do with the world’s cultures, history, and language.” Linda is an alum of EAP, studying in Bordeaux, France in 1975-76. While there, she honed her fluency in the French language, traveled extensively throughout Europe, and developed an appreciation for a world much larger than the U.S. Perhaps most importantly, she learned self reliance, a lifelong skill that she has found to be a key in almost every aspect of her adult life. “Self reliance is so important for success in life, yet it is not specifically cultivated in our educational or social systems. Immersion in a foreign culture provides the opportunity to develop this skill, because you don’t have the comfort of a language you already speak, a culture you instinctively know or a circle of ready-made friends. new financial aid opportunity for EAP students was established
last year—the Dan Wise Scholarship Fund. This fund enabled
16 EAP students to attend full-year programs in Europe, China,
and Asia during 2004-2005. It was established by Linda Duttenhaver,
who created the fund in honor of her close friend Dan Wise,
who passed away in 2002.
