Beyond the Classroom

Many EAP options offer research, internships, or independent study. EAP students around the world have completed fascinating and worthwhile projects in many disciplines.

Research, internships, and independent study provide an invaluable complement to the work a student completes at UC. Such options can also enhance a student’s professional development, and provide valuable contacts for the future. At most EAP sites, students are welcome to craft research or independent study projects, which they conduct during their time abroad under the direction of local faculty.

During the spring of 2004 ten EAP students submitted research abstracts for a competition sponsored by the Forum on Education Abroad Undergraduate Research Awards. Their research papers appear on the EAP website. The following are their comments about how their international experience contributed to their research.

  • England: The Effect of Nucleoside Uptake on Modulating the Activity of Efferent Motor Neurons in Rat Spinal Cord
  • Rome: The Design, Building Methods, and Construction Theories of Hadrian’s Pantheon
  • China: Environmental Protection with Chinese Characteristics
  • Singapore: Gender and Race Paradigms in Oral Narratives
