2000 Miles to Darwin

After a few weeks in Australia, the numerous kangaroo sightings become commonplace and EAP students begin to seek the broader experiences that a year on exchange offers. Using every bit of their spare time to explore, they find that Australia offers a rich menu of interesting destinations.

Last year a group of students hired (rented) a car in Perth and drove about 2000 miles up the isolated west coast of Australia to Darwin, one of the remotest regions in the world. This trip mirrored well the experience described in the Australian novel Dirt Music by Tim Winton. The students reported back on the spectacular scenery and interesting encounters with locals of both European and Aboriginal origin. They also told of unfortunate encounters between their rented car and kangaroos, which left both their car and the animals in bad shape.

In addition to the rich set of in-country opportunities, most countries of Southeast Asia—Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, are an affordable commute. While most students go to Thailand to gather with other young people at the popular beaches, others make more unconventional choices. One set of students spent a study break exploring the wild rivers and remote villages of Thailand.
