Four thousand Education Abroad (EAP) students are expected to plunge into the challenges of unfamiliar and mind-bending academic and social learning during 2003-04. They will be preparing themselves for careers in a California heavily dependent on world trade. They will be equipping themselves for effective citizenship in a troubled time when understanding of global issues, be they environmental, cultural, political or economic, will be critical to the survival of a democratic society. They will be relishing the adventure, building new coping skills and learning within a context of diverse histories, customs, pedagogies, languages, attitudes and diets.

Universally, EAP alumni - there are over 40,000 - report that participation in the program has changed their lives. It has enhanced their self-knowledge and confidence, opened new career opportunities, increased their understanding and appreciation of diversely complex, exciting, baffling, needful, stagnant and swiftly changing worlds beyond our borders.

By bringing close to a thousand highly selective exchange students from EAP partner institutions abroad EAP also adds intellectual yeast to UC campuses.

World offers glimpses into EAP enrichment of student lives and the University curricula. Its message is simple:

  • EAP is accessible... normal fees, scholarships and financial aid make it so.
  • EAP is academically strong... faculty leadership and oversight along with skilled professional staff guarantee it.
  • EAP is safe... diligent and continuous security planning and on-site monitoring and support structures assure this.

EAP is offering a range of quality study opportunities (33 countries, 141 institutions) unmatched by any other institution of higher learning.
