Housing Information

Housing is not guaranteed. Be aware that the standard rental agreement for housing accommodations is nine months (or until the end of the academic year for students arriving in January). Students leaving their housing before the end of the agreement may be subject to a cancellation fee.

California Housing Board (Non-UC Housing)

The California Housing Board provides a forum for all Education Abroad Program participants to share information about housing for rent and housing situations wanted in California. Students are encouraged to post messages about housing sublets, shared housing situations, rooms for rent, and rentals.

Campus Housing (UC Housing)

Undergraduate students under 25 years of age

Undergraduate EAP Reciprocity students studying at UCI for a full academic year (fall, winter and spring terms - are eligible to apply.

Students planning to attend UCI for less than a full academic year (fall or fall/winter terms only) cannot apply for on-campus housing. See information on housing off-campus or consider privately owned and managed apartment communities on the UCI campus (see Option 2).

Arroyo Vista Theme Houses For available themes during the 2009-10 year, see this website. Reciprocity students have the status of "New Transfer Students."

We advise that you indicate an interest in all three housing communities to maximize your chances of being offered a space. You may also be placed in a different housing community, pending available space.

Applicants to the International Village and/or one of the Arroyo Vista theme houses, must write a separate Statement of Interest. Fill out the application completely. It will be read and is an important part of the selection process.

Application Notes: Use your application ID number (located in your UC application acknowledgement letter or obtained from UOEAP) and your student ID number (located in your UCI acceptance letter) to login.

Application Deadline: June 1, 2009 (4:30 pm California time)

Application Fee: Non-refundable $20.00 processing fee required with application.

Deposit Required: Students who fail to meet the contract/reservation fee payment deadline will lose their on-campus housing assignment.

Method of Payment Option: Online with a credit card, or by printing a payment coupon and mailing it with a check, or money order in US dollars, payable to "UC Regents." Contact CIE immediately if you have problems obtaining a bank draft or an international money order.

Notification of Housing Assignments: Successful applicants will receive a housing contract by e-mail and standard air mail. The housing contract must be returned with the reservation fee by the deadline stamped on the contract. Check your e-mail every day if you are traveling over the holidays.

You may arrive no more than 30 days prior to the start of your academic program. Program dates are printed on your visa certificate of eligibility. Students who do not have pre-arranged housing are advised to arrive early.

International Center Checkin: Remember to take a photocopy of your passport, your I-20 form (F-1 students) or DS-2019 (J-1 students), your I-94 card (the I-94 is a white card often stapled in your passport and stamped at the port-of-entry), and local address in California.

Statement of Legal Residence (SLR)

You must complete your SLR before the enrollment deadline to be able to enroll in classes. Failure to complete the SLR by this date will lead to a hold being placed on your record. As a result, you will be unable to enroll in classes, and you will be liable for a $50 late enrollment fee. You will receive your UCI student ID number from the UCI campus by e-mail. Your UC application ID number is located in your UC application acknowledgement letter or can be obtained from UOEAP.

Graduate students usually register after arrival and after consultation with the department’s graduate advisor. Check with your host department for registration advising.


English Language and Placement Testing

English Language Placement Exam: None required

English Language Placement Exam for registration for classes: May be required for some introductory classes. Refer to the testing office website to determine if you are required to take this exam.

Health Insurance

2009-10 costs and information are listed below.

Requirement: Students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan unless they complete a waiver form and provide proof of equivalent coverage, and it is approved.

Cost: Undergraduates $227 per quarter; graduates $782 per quarter.

Billing: Each quarter

Payment may be made at the Central Cashier's Office upon arrival at UCI.
