UC Inaugurates La Casa de la Universidad de California en México
The president of the University of California, Robert C. Dynes,
and distinguished Mexican officials--including Secretary of Education
Reyes Tamez Guerra, Director General of Mexico's National Council
of Science and Technology (CONACYT) Jaime Parada Ávila
and the President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences Octavio
Paredes López--will formally inaugurate La Casa de la
Universidad de California en México at a ceremony on April
11, 2005, in Mexico City.
The dedication ceremony will take place from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m.
at the gardens of La Casa de California, located at Carmen #
1, Chimalistac Delegación Álvaro Obregón.
First authorized by the UC Board of Regents in 2001, La Casa
de California was designed to further academic collaboration
between UC and Mexican institutions and government.
"La Casa de California is an extraordinarily valuable
resource that will greatly enhance the activities and interaction
between UC's academic personnel and our Mexican colleagues," Dynes
said. "It will also help consolidate scholarly and scientific
collaboration between Mexico and California."
The facility will not only serve to establish a physical presence
for the University in Mexico, but also will become the center
for expanded bilateral programs and interaction in instruction
and research.
As such, La Casa is an integral part of the ongoing and increasing
exchanges between UC and Mexican institutions that include, among
many other programs:
- UC MEXUS
Through an agreement between UC and
Mexico's National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT),
UC MEXUS has initiated a number of highly successful academic
programs that have supported collaborative projects for teams
of UC and Mexican researchers and have provided support for
postdoctoral studies, faculty visits and sabbatical stays for
Mexican and
UC researchers.
- The Education Abroad Program (EAP) has an active
and growing presence in Mexico including exchange programs
with the
UNAM, a Field Research Program anchored in Mexico City, and
the Mexico-U.S. Comparative Perspectives Program. The latter
option,
designed specifically to draw on the unique synergy and resources
of La Casa, offers participants coursework taught by Mexican
scholars that explore contrasting views of issues critical
to Mexico and the U.S.
- The California-Mexico Health Initiative (CMHI)
Created
in 2001, its objective is to coordinate and optimize the availability
of health resources for Mexican immigrants and their families
through bilateral training, research, and health promotion activities
in partnership with Mexico's Secretariats of Health and
Foreign Affairs and the Mexican Institute of Social Security.
- UCSD, Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies
The San
Diego Center is one of UC's most active and distinguished
campus programs and has strong support of scholars and policy
makers in both countries.
La Casa de California will build upon the strong ties already
forged between UC and Mexican institutions like CONACYT. Several
UC programs, including UC MEXUS and the Education Abroad Program,
will have permanent offices at the facility.
La Casa also opens the opportunity for the development of new
UC academic programs. Some of the UC programs already interested
in using the facility include the UC Committee on Latina(o) Research
in conjunction with various Mexican institutions of higher learning,
UC Irvine's Center for Virus Research in partnership with
Mexico's National University (UNAM), UC Santa Barbara's
Department of Anthropology in association with Mexico's
Center for Research and Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS),
and many other campus and systemwide programs.
In addition to the dedication ceremony, UC alumni will be meeting
at the Casa to explore the possibility of establishing a Mexico
chapter of the Alumni Associations of the University of California.
