Faculty Exchange Program—Italy
In keeping with its mission as an international academic program,
the Education Abroad Program (EAP) sponsors faculty exchanges to
develop, strengthen, and diversify its academic linkages with partner
institutions abroad.
Exchanges are intended to provide UC faculty members with the knowledge
they need to help integrate study abroad into the curricula of their
home UC campuses, while providing them with collaborative research
and teaching opportunities.
Exchange visitors also gather information and provide advice to
EAP about the programs and courses available at host institutions,
as well as student welfare issues.
Exchange visits are generally for periods of four to six weeks.
Financial support is provided as a round-trip economy airfare and
a displacement allowance partially offsetting the cost of being
in the host country, ranging from $1,500 to $2,000, depending on
the country.
For 2008-2009, EAP will support UC faculty visits to its three
Italian partner universities: University of Bologna;
University of Commerce Luigi Bocconi, Milan; and
the University of Padova.
Eligibility
Members of the UC Academic Senate are invited to submit proposals
to EAP for exchange visits. Junior faculty and faculty engaged
in undergraduate advising are especially encouraged to apply.
Priority will be given to UC faculty who have not been selected
for an EAP faculty exchange within the last three years.
How to Apply
Applicants must submit the following:
- Completed EAP Faculty
Exchange Application
- Statement of purpose for the proposed visit
- Current curriculum vitae
- Letter of invitation from the host university Faculty Sponsor
(described below)
Faculty Sponsor
Applicants are required to identify a faculty sponsor at the host
institution they wish to visit. The faculty sponsor will be instrumental
in the success of the visit. The sponsor will help the UC faculty
member find housing, facilitate appropriate academic introductions,
and make arrangements for the visiting UC faculty member to have
access to libraries and research facilities.
Application Deadline
Exchange applications and proposals are due to the applicant’s
UC Campus EAP Office by April 15, 2008. Proposals will also
be accepted through June 30, 2008, if places remain open.
Selection
Proposals will be reviewed by the Study Center Director, EAP Campus Director, EAP Regional Director, and EAP Universitywide Associate Dean. Notification of selection will be via letter by August
1, 2008. The letter will contain detailed information about the
exchange visit. Exchanges are expected to take place during the
2008-2009 academic year (through June 30, 2009).
Logistics
Successful applicants will be contacted by EAP’s Faculty
Exchange Coordinator., who will assist with travel arrangements,
payment, and special circumstances; and who will also contact the
appropriate EAP Study Center Director and EAP Campus Director to
notify them of the exchange visit. It is critical that the exchange
participant maintain contact with the sponsoring host faculty member
and Study Center Director who are responsible for arranging housing,
providing academic introductions, scheduling and publicizing the
visiting faculty member’s itinerary and providing orientation
to the university’s resources and access to libraries and
research facilities. Not all host universities request that UC visiting
faculty members deliver lectures; however, visiting UC faculty need
to communicate with the host university regarding expectations.
It is recommended that participants discuss housing arrangements
with their host sponsors well in advance of their visit.
Note: In all communication with a potential faculty host,
the applicant is instructed to clarify that he/she has not yet
been selected as an EAP Faculty Exchange Program participant.
Reporting
Exchange participants are required to submit a written report about
their visits to the Universitywide Director of EAP within one month
of the conclusion of their exchange visits.
Reports should include a description of the exchange participant’s
activities and schedule, as well as the host university department,
teaching methods, and academic offerings as specified by the EAP
Regional Director before the visit. Reports may be circulated by
EAP to individual UC faculty, departments, and Academic Senate committees.
The reports are designed to identify distinguished and distinctive
opportunities for UC students at the host university, as well as
provide information on collaborative efforts and the strengthening
of academic linkages. Reports often focus on academic information
that will be of value to students interested in going to that location.
Faculty exchange participants are asked to consider the following
questions when preparing their reports:
A. Description of the Host University and Host Department
B. Course Work
1. What instructional programs and/or courses are offered which
are not common on UC campuses?
2. Considering the level of student preparation required, which
courses and/or level of courses should UC sophomores, juniors,
seniors, and graduate students be able to take successfully?
C. Teaching Methods
D. Overview of Academic Offerings
1. What characteristics distinguish this university from UC?
2. How well will host university courses integrate into the
UC academic curriculum?
E. Environmental/Cultural Observations
1. Describe any aspects of the campus(es) and surrounding environment
that might have a bearing on student safety and satisfaction.
Continued Involvement with EAP
EAP welcomes the continued involvement of UC faculty in EAP activities
at all UC campuses. Faculty can assist Campus EAP Offices with academic
advising, recruitment, selection, and orientation for EAP students.
Faculty are also critical in integrating EAP offerings into existing
or new UC academic programs.
UC faculty serve on systemwide planning committees and program
development task forces to guide the development of future EAP programs.
They also serve on EAP program review committees to help strengthen
and enhance existing programs. Locally, UC faculty serve as members
of EAP Academic Senate committees, and as EAP Liaison Officers or
EAP Campus Directors. More extensive involvement includes serving
as an EAP Study Center Director.
