Other Faculty Opportunities

EAP Campus Directorships

The Campus EAP Office provides the interface between the systemwide EAP administration and the students, faculty, and academic units on the campuses; coordinates student recruitment, selection, and predeparture orientation; and deals with the integration of EAP into the UC curriculum. The Campus EAP Office also serves as EAP’s link to the campus administration and the campus at large. UC faculty oversee the EAP offices at each UC campus and serve in a variety of administrative, collaborative, advisory, and academically integrative roles.

EAP Campus Faculty Directors across the system comprise the Council of Campus Directors (CCD), a body that facilitates collaboration among campus programs and advises EAP senior leadership about programmatic issues. The Campus Faculty Directors also play leading roles in Academic Integration, the comprehensive integration of EAP programs and courses into the curricula of the University of California campuses.

For further information contact the EAP Campus Director on your campus.

Departmental Liaisons

The quality and accessibility of EAP programs depends on the quality of the guidance that faculty provide to their students. At some campuses EAP liaisons assess and identify EAP instructional offerings with “value-added” potential for students in particular majors, enabling students to participate purposefully and creatively in EAP’s distinctive and rigorous international learning opportunities.

EAP liaisons help to embed EAP programs into departmental requirements. They recommend EAP study programs, including specific courses, internships, or research programs that will complement or enhance current campus offerings, especially requirements for the major. Liaisons also advise students who have returned from EAP about the best means of applying what they learned abroad to their current classes or independent research. The departmental liaisons also are advisory to the EAP Campus Faculty Director.

Program Development

UC faculty play a crucial advisory role in initiating, planning, developing, and evaluating new and existing programs. Faculty provide counsel by serving on advisory committees and through program development and site visits on behalf of EAP.

For further information, contact Bruce Madewell, EAP Associate Dean, at (805) 893-7183 or brmadewell@eap.cuop.edu.

Academic Senate Committee Membership

Through the Academic Senate, faculty may serve on the University Committee on International Education (UCIE) and on campus committees dealing, at least partly, with EAP. In addition, committees made up of UC faculty serve in an advisory capacity to UCIE. Faculty are frequently asked informally for advice and counsel as well.

UCIE advises the Academic Council and the President of the University on matters concerning program policies, future developments, selection of Study Center Directors, UC accreditation of courses taken abroad, formal reviews of EAP programs, and the establishment and promotion of effective communication between EAP and the different campuses.

Faculty Advisory Committees

Faculty Advisory Committees consist of faculty experts who advise UCIE and the Universitywide Office of EAP on program development.

Student Relations

The quality of the students selected and the predeparture guidance students receive greatly affect the success of each program. On some campuses, UC faculty participate in recruitment, selection, and orientation of EAP students. UC faculty serve on committees for selected programs where they help to select qualified UC students. Faculty also serve as departmental advisors, sometimes participate in predeparture orientations, and provide academic counseling to prospective and returning EAP students.
