EAP Scholarships & Financial AidThe cost of many EAP programs is comparable to the cost of a term at UC. Some cost more, some less, based largely on local living costs. Programs are often made more affordable through financial aid and scholarships. The following are a few forms of financial aid (which include scholarships, grants, and loans) available to EAP students. Check with your Campus EAP Office for details.
Financial AidUC financial aid applies towards study abroad on EAP. Even if you have not been eligible for financial aid in the past, consult with your campus advisers—you might be eligible for financial aid while on EAP. All EAP students, regardless of income level, are encouraged to apply for financial aid. See the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Check for applicable deadlines. Detailed EAP financial aid information for:EAP ScholarshipsEach year EAP students receive over $1 million in need-based and other EAP scholarships typically ranging from $500 to $3,000, varying by program. Awards are based primarily on the cost of a particular EAP program and a student’s financial circumstances. These scholarships supplement all other types of financial aid awarded through the campus financial aid offices, for which EAP students are still eligible (UC, California state, federal aid). Special Country ScholarshipsSpecial country scholarships for students going to Egypt, Germany, and Japan. Additional scholarships may be available from the host universities and other public and private organizations. After acceptance to EAP, students should contact their host university to inquire about additional scholarship possibilities. Non-EAP ScholarshipsThe American Women’s Club in Stockholm, Sweden, offers scholarships to American women planning to study in Sweden. The scholarship consists of a travel grant for the equivalent of a plane ticket from the student’s hometown in the US to Stockholm. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program will provide up to $5,000 for US citizens studying abroad. Applicants must be undergraduate students receiving federal Pell Grant funding for the term of his/her program.
Freeman-Asia Awards for Study in Asia are available to US citizens or permanent residents who plan to study in one of a number of Asian countries, including Japan. Students must have a verifiable financial need to study abroad, and preference is given to those with no previous experience in the country in which they plan to study. Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. Awards range from $3,000 to $7,000. Hostelling International-American Youth Hostels, Los Angeles Council awards a travel grant to a deserving student between 17-26 years old to assist the recipient in realizing their educational goals through travel. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars’ Scholar Abroad awards one $5,000 scholarship is awarded each fall and spring semester and one $2,500 scholarship is awarded for the summer term. National Security Education Program David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships provide support to US undergraduates who plan to study the languages and cultures that are critical to US national security and that are currently underrepresented in study abroad. Award amounts typically range from $2,500 to $6,000, and can be higher. The Rotary Foundation sponsors short-term, one-year, and multi-year scholarships for students wishing to study in any country where there are Rotary Clubs. These scholarships provide funding for tuition, room, board and expenses. Applicants must apply over one year prior to the year of study. Application deadlines are set by the local Rotary Clubs. The local Rotary can provide information. The Standard Filter Corporation Swedish Educational and Cultural Honorarium (SECH) is awarded annually to a student at an accredited college or university in the United States or Sweden. The purpose of the SECH shall be to support students undertaking Swedish educational and cultural activities, which would be broadly interpreted to include such varied areas as history, political science, sociology, language, literature, and the arts and sciences. UNESCO provides study abroad students with an international guide (very large pdf!) to some 3,000 entries on scholarships in different higher-education academic disciplines in 145 countries.
