Information for students interested in studying in countries with U.S. State Department Travel Warnings

The University of California values the academic and cultural education students receive by studying in countries throughout the world. The Education Abroad Program (EAP) is an essential part of UC's mission to produce well-educated and informed citizens.

However, these educational goals must also be balanced with the well-being and safety of students. Out of concerns for their safety, EAP has for many years maintained a policy of suspending programs in any country where a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning is in effect. The State Department issues Travel Warnings when it decides, based on all relevant information, to recommend that Americans avoid travel to a certain country.

Countries currently covered by a Travel Warning

Some students, despite the formal Travel Warning, may still wish to study at academic institutions where UC has suspended its programs. Those students are advised to first consult with their campus contacts about specific campus policies and procedures related to issues such as transfer credit, leaves of absence and financial aid.

Suspended EAP programs in Israel and the Philippines

Travel Warnings have currently been issued for two countries in which the EAP has programs – Israel and the Philippines. Students who wish to study in either of these countries, despite the Travel Warning, can find information below about the institutions where EAP study is normally offered.

Those institutions' web sites contain information about application procedures, program dates, current course offerings, costs and financial aid. The EAP web site lists courses that have been approved (as of 2002) for graduation credit on every UC campus. For more information about the current status of these courses, students should consult with their campus contact for these programs.

By providing this information, EAP is not recommending, approving or endorsing travel or study to Israel or the Philippines.
