Hungary: Programs in Central European Studies

Highlights

With specialized course work taught in English by some of the leading intellectuals and scholars of the region, these programs offer a wide perspective on the dynamics of cultural and social changes in Central Europe. Field excursions to places such as Transylvania and major monuments and museums of Bohemia further enhance students’ understanding of this region. Internships and special study opportunities are available in the spring. (details)

Fall semester: mid-August to mid-December (calendar)
Academic year: mid-August to mid-May (calendar)
Spring semester:
mid-January to mid-May (calendar)

Qualified fall students may extend their EAP participation to the spring program.

Academic Focus

Students select from specialized core course offerings in European studies, Central European studies, and Hungarian language. Students may select one or two courses from the regular curriculum at ELTE or CEU. (details)

Fall semester: Students take three courses (6 units each) plus one language course. With the permission of the Study Center Director, students may substitute one university course from offerings at ELTE or CEU for one core course.

Spring semester: Students take at least two core courses plus Hungarian language. Students may substitute two university courses from offerings at ELTE or CEU for two core courses. A limited number of internships and special study projects are also available in the spring.

Students attend classes with other UC students (most ELTE core courses) and Hungarian students (electives at ELTE and CEU).

Language Study

Program begins with one week of introductory Hungarian language and culture study. Hungarian language study is required during the first semester (spring or fall) and strongly recommended during the second semester (for students who extend from the fall to the spring).

Units

Students are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 24 UC quarter units per semester are required (about four courses).

Housing

Students live in apartments with other UC students and occasionally with international students and host country students. (details)
