Germany: Semester Programs in English in Berlin: Berlin European Studies (BEST) at Free University

Highlights

EAP’s fall and/or spring semester program is taught in English at Free University in Berlin. The program features first-year German language study and a range of course work in the humanities and social sciences that focuses on German and European studies.

Duration

Fall semester: late August to mid-December (calendar)
Spring semester: early January to late April (calendar)

Qualified fall students may extend their EAP participation to the spring program.

Academic Focus

UC students enroll in a course in beginning German in addition to three non-language courses taught in English that focus on Europe, Germany, and/or Berlin.

Course topics such as the following may be offered:

  • Contemporary Germany in European Perspective
  • Integration, Conflict, and Security in Europe
  • Themes and Trends in Modern Central European Literature and Theater
  • Perspectives in 20th-century Art in Central Europe
  • German Cinema Before 1945
  • Human Psychology and the Totalitarian Experience
  • Berlin: History, Memory, and Literature
  • Modern German History in European Context: A Thematic Approach

Language Study

Students are required to enroll in a course in beginning German.

Units

Students are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad. Approximately 24 UC quarter units are required (about four courses). Approximately 29 units will be earned on the spring intensive language track.

Housing

Students live either in homestays in private homes with German families, or in apartments with UC and other American students. All student housing is organized by the host university. (details)
