France: Selection Criteria

Students must submit a complete application to the Campus EAP Office. Application deadlines are earlier than you think. Don't miss out!

 Application deadlines

Undergraduate applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

General

Requirements vary by program. Most programs have prerequisites and all programs have a minimum GPA requirement. Some programs require one to two years of university-level training in the host country language. For further details see your Campus EAP Office and the EAP website.

In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into the student’s UC degree program
  • Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
  • Willingness to abide by program regulations
  • Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

Intensive Language and Culture Programs

UC Center, Paris

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior

  • Language prerequisite: Zero to a maximum of two quarters (one semester) of university-level French.

  • GPA: 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application and maintained throughout the end of the winter quarter (or spring semester) prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office).

  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Bordeaux

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate

  • Language prerequisite: Minimum of three quarters (two semesters) and maximum of five quarters (three semesters) of university-level French by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should consult with their Campus EAP Advisor for details.

  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.

  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission. Students apply for the French language and culture programs and are placed in either the Bordeaux or Lyon program as appropriate.

Lyon

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate

  • Language prerequisite: Three to four quarters (two to three semesters) of beginning university-level French. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.

  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.

  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission. Students apply for the French language and culture programs and are placed in either the Bordeaux or Lyon program as appropriate.

Immersion Programs

Bordeaux

  • Class level: junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Two years of university-level French. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.
    Fall semester students may be placed by the Universitywide Office of EAP in either Bordeaux, Lyon, or Grenoble, as appropriate. Students are not guaranteed their first placement choice.

Grenoble

  • Class level: junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Two years of university-level French. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.

Special Focus Programs

American University of Paris, Introductory Studies in Western Civilization Programs (canceled after 2007-08)

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior (sophomores and juniors receive priority)

  • Language prerequisite: Zero to a maximum of three quarters (two semesters) of university-level French. Students may be required to repeat course work in French while on the program, depending on the language level they test at upon arrival in Paris.

  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.

  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

UC Center in Paris, Programs in French and European Studies

  • Class level: sophomore, junior, senior
  • Language prerequisite: Minimum of one quarter (one semester) and maximum of four quarters (three semesters) of university-level French
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Grenoble Science and Engineering Programs

  • Class level: junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Two years of university-level French by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Other: Background in the natural sciences or engineering. For graduate students, departmental approval through completion of the Graduate Preliminary Inquiry Form and the Graduate Student Agreement is required.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection and final admission.

Critical Studies Program, Paris Center for Critical Studies (canceled after 2007-08)

  • Class level: junior, senior, graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Two years of university-level French and one upper-division course, taught in French, by departure. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by the Campus EAP Office). Students below a 3.0 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.
  • Other: Background in contemporary French thought, film theory, film history, literary theory, philosophy, and/or semiotics. Students interested in other areas of study should consider one of the immersion programs in Bordeaux, Lyon, Grenoble, or Toulouse.
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.

Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po)

  • Class level: junior, senior, graduate

  • Language prerequisite: (for the French Track only) Two years of university-level French, at least one upper-division course taught in French, and high proficiency in spoken and written French by time of departure. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
    Language is not required for students in the English Track.

  • GPA: 3.3 cumulative GPA and 3.3 language GPA by the end of the last term prior to departure (or earlier if required by campus). Students below a 3.3 must confer with a Campus EAP Advisor before submitting an application.

  • Other: Background in political science and related fields. Excellent relevant academic record required. At least two years of university course work (high school AP credit does not count).

  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.

Graduate Program

École Normale Supérieure, Paris (ENS rue d'Ulm)

  • Class level: graduate
  • Language prerequisite: Fluency in French. Students must have sufficient knowledge of French upon arrival to understand what is being said in seminars, to converse with officials, and to do research. Students may continue to perfect their French during the year through language courses arranged by ENS. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since students last took a course in French, it is recommended that they refresh their proficiency. Students should see their Campus EAP Advisor for details.
  • GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA in graduate level courses at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure
  • Other: Graduate standing and departmental approval through completion of the Graduate Preliminary Inquiry form and the Graduate Student Agreement
  • Admission: The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.
